Psychology is known as the study of the mind and behavior. This study can relate to the principles of social justice by understanding why people do the things that they do. What motivates us? Why do we feel the things we feel? Why do we do the things that we do? Any questions that seek to understand individuals and groups is related to psychology.
We believe that social influence is a big part of our topic. Social influence is when one’s emotions, opinions, and behaviors are affected by others due to a concept called conformity. Conformity mostly occurs when one wants to be socially accepted into a group. In Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, one of the human needs is love and belong. With this, it is in theory that people need to have social interaction to be a healthy person. To connect this to our topic, this can have a negative effect called cultural assimilation. Cultural assimilation is the process by which a person or their way of living is slowly replaced or resemble those of another group.
Another psychological concept that can be related to our topic is trauma. When a child is born in Mexico and is separated from their parents as the parents travel to the U.S to make money, this can cause trauma to them. They lose a sense of comfort from where they’re naturally supposed to have that feeling because they lose that interaction.
There has been numerous studies in psychology where in the process of the research, there has been bad intentions. Psychology is a study that is supposed to help understand ourselves and should be used for the benefit of ourselves. This subject now has guidelines and ethical standards that will help protect participants and everything involved in what we are trying to find out.
