How is this conflict discussed?
There are basically two points of view when it comes to the debate of whether or not undocumented Mexicans should be granted amnesty and given the same opportunities as everyone else: yes or no.
The pro-amnesty side believes the United States government should grant undocumented immigrants amnesty. Nathan Thornburgh, reporter from Time magazine stated “whether you fine illegal aliens or stick them in English classes or make them say a hundred Hail Marys, at the end of the day, illegals would be allowed to stay and become citizens... that's amnesty. And that's a good thing for America. Amnesty won't depress wages - globalization has already done that. Amnesty will not undermine the rule of law.” Thornburgh was trying to say that granting amnesty would most definitely create less stress among this country and make it easy for everyone. If they are given amnesty, families would not be separated, police and the judicial system could focus on other criminals, and laws would be regulated to make sure that everything is under control. He acknowledges that it wouldn’t be a poor decision and we should be open to it.
Some, however, feel that the undocumented people should not enjoy the same benefits as U.S citizens. The Heritage Foundation is a conservative research organization that provides insights of conservatives and promotes public policies from the right wing. What they had to say about giving immigrants amnesty was that "regardless of the penalties imposed those who enter the United States illegally should not be rewarded with permanent legal status or other such benefits, and they should be penalized in any road to citizenship. Those who enter and remain in the country illegally are violating the law, and condoning or encouraging such violations increases the likelihood of further illegal conduct.” This author suggested that anyone who tries to live a better life by coming into the United States in the non-traditional way is a criminal and should be treated like one. Simply because they are taking matters into their own hands. Other reasons why people are against immigration reforms vary from concerns of more undocumented Mexicans coming to live here, the conflict of undocumented workers “taking” jobs from U.S citizens, and fear of the possibility of the economy going downhill.
